Sustainable tear tape launched 26 June 2023

tesa® has launched the tesa® 51344 paper-based tear tape – featuring a strong paper backing, combined with a high-tack adhesive – for use with cardboard and paper-based packing and shipping envelopes, boxes and other materials.

The tesa® 51344 is also highly recyclable and can be disposed of along with the paper and cardboard-based packaging materials with which it is used – making tesa® one of very few producers in the market that offers this innovation in its portfolio and providing customers in the corrugated board industry with a more sustainable product, one also suitable for use on automated production lines.

With online shopping booming and global parcel shipping volumes, according to Statista, reaching over 159 billion parcels in 2021, with a projected number of 256 billion shipping parcels in 2027, the downside of this boom are the tonnes of board and paper waste not disposed of correctly. Very often, plastic/polymer-based filling materials and adhesive tapes end up in wastepaper and must be meticulously separated before recycling processes are possible – which is where the new tesa® 51344 comes into its own.

Frank Domann, corporate marketing director industrial markets at tesa® said the new product presents customers with a fully integrated and more sustainable solution for use with the production of packaging and cardboard shipping material. “We make tesa® 51344 without solvents and the paper used comes from controlled sources.” He added that the development of products that help promote sustainability is a strategic goal for tesa®, which also wants to support its customers and partners in achieving their own sustainability goals. “With tesa® 51344, our customers may take advantage of a more sustainable
product for their manufacturing process, while at the same time we improve the ecological balance of shipping boxes or shipping envelopes.”

The Paper Technology Foundation (PTS) classifies tesa® 51344 as ‘recyclable’. The recyclability test, according to PTS-RH 021:2012, confirming that the new tape is both recyclable and, therefore, disposable with board-based packing materials. During its development phase, tesa® 51344 also passed several application tests with different cardboard and corrugated flute types.

tesa® 51344 is now available and customer-specific materials can be tested with it at any time, on request.
