Rapid Racking solution for Apex 03 March 2016

Rapid Racking Ltd has installed a new storage and racking solution for Apex Stainless Fasteners Ltd to maximise all available height within its newly refurbished warehouse.

As a manufacturer and international distributor of nuts, bolts, screws and other stainless steel fastening products, Apex had a diverse requirement for storage – requiring a solution for storing heavy palletised stock. Furthermore, when storing smaller unpalletised items, small parts could be easily lost underneath or between shelving units and so finding the right solution that would meet both of these diverse needs was key.

Following a detailed site survey, Rapid Racking’s design team specified a heavy-duty adjustable pallet racking system. The key benefit of this system is the ability to maximise all the available height within the facility, whilst taking into consideration Apex’s material handling equipment used on-site.

Installed by a SEIRS qualified installation team, the arrangement incorporates drive-through tunnels for easy manoeuvrability around the site and features pallet storage above, making use of all interior space. The newly installed racking bays can now store nearly 30 tonnes of equipment and, because the Rapid Racking team was brought in during the design stages, the warehouse floor has been designed to sustain such loads – mitigating any risk of collapse in the early stages.

David Jennings, design engineer at Rapid Racking, explained: “We were involved in the development right from the beginning. This is quite unusual but the advantages for customers are huge, ensuring the site reaches its greatest potential while making the operation as efficient as possible.”

In the adjoining refurbished space, boxes of stainless steel fastenings are stored. This area was also fitted with the Rapid 1 heavy-duty shelving system. Installed to a height of 4m, the system is ideal for access via mobile steps. Two runs of pallet racking were also installed, which feature anti-spill mesh to help protect staff from picking from adjacent shelves – a common concern in this type of application. To complete the installation, Rapid Racking has also installed workstations and packing benches for a complete storage and handling solution.
